The Acropolis Museum was firstly conceived by Constantinos Karamanlis in September 1976.

He also selected the site, upon which the Museum was finally built, decades later.

With his penetrating vision, C. Karamanlis defined the need and established the means for a new Museum equipped with all technical facilities for the conservation of the invaluable Greek artifacts, where eventually the Parthenon sculptures will be reunited.

For these reasons, architectural competitions were conducted in 1976 and 1979, but without success.

In 1989, Melina Mercouri, who as Minister of Culture inextricably identified her policies with the claim for the return of the Parthenon Marbles from the British Museum, initiated an international architectural competition.

The results of this competition were annulled following the discovery of a large urban settlement on the Makriyianni site dating from Archaic to Early Christian Athens.

This discovery now needed to be integrated into the New Museum that was to be built on this site.

In the year 2000, the Organization for the Construction of the New Acropolis Museum announced an invitation to a new tender, which was realized in accord with the Directives of the European Union.

It is this Tender that has come to fruition with the awarding of the design tender to Bernard Tschumi with Michael Photiadis and their associates and the completion of construction in 2007.

Today, the new Acropolis Museum has a total area of 25,000 square meters, with exhibition space of over 14,000 square meters, ten times more than that of the old museum on the Hill of the Acropolis.

The new Museum offers all the amenities expected in an international museum of the 21st century.

This building is located in Vassilisis Sophias avenue in the opposite side of Hilton hotel.

I am not aware of if it is a home or it is used as company offices (although I'd bet for the second) but I fing it extremely beautifull!

Athens art: Botsoglou ''Ta erotica''

Last week I visited a great exposition of a greek artist named Chronis Botsoglou in the Foundation ''Alli Arcadia'' (other arcadia) in 16, Fokionos Negri str. in Kipseli, in the centre of Athens.

Twenty-two reliefs in bronze, four projects with graphite pencil and watercolors, and twelve paintings in Chinese rice paper depict the act of love.

I definately suggest this art exposition!

The entrance is free and the Foundation is open:

Wednesday 18:00 - 21:00

Saturday 11:00- 18:00

Sunday 11:00 - 16:00

The expostion lasts untill January 29, 2012.

Athens train stations: Victoria station

Viktoria station is named after the British monarch Queen Victoria. The architectural style of this underground station is Art Deco and the walls are covered with light blue tiles. Before and after the renovation, the station's name is shown in big white labels that were made in Germany. The concept of the station is very similar to the stations in Berlin, the stairs in this concept go directly to the street.

Viktoria station is 5 minutes walking distance from the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

Together with those pictures, goes one of my favorite poems of an american poet, Joyce Kilmer. The poem is called ''Roofs''.

The road is wide and the stars are out

and the breath of the night is sweet,

And this is the time when wanderlust should seize upon my feet.

But I'm glad to turn from the open road and the starlight on my face,

And to leave the splendour of out-of-doors for a human dwelling place.

I never have seen a vagabond who really liked to roam

All up and down the streets of the world and not to have a home:

Will wander only until he finds another place to stay.

A gypsy-man will sleep in his cart with canvas overhead;

Some of the current students and recent graduates of the Art School in the University of Athens were called to create art work in some of the (many) empty shops in the centre of Athens during Christmas time. More than ten empty shops were decorated by artwork inspired by the economic crisis and the Greek society in general. Here are some of the pictures taken during an art walk last week.
